Serving Those Who Served
As the weather grows colder, many of us look forward to cozy nights by the fire, warm meals, and time spent with family. But for some members of our community, this time of year brings added challenges and uncertainty.
This Veterans Day, we’re coming together with Berks County Veterans Affairs to help local veterans put food on the table, keep the lights on, and find a little extra comfort during the colder months.
And we’d love for you to be part of it!
Lending a Helping Hand to Local Veterans
Discovery Federal Credit Union is proud to donate $2,000 to the Berks County Veterans Affairs Temporary Assistance Fund, a program that provides short-term financial support to local veterans facing unexpected hardships.
Jay Ostrich, Director, Berks County Veterans Affairs said, “The incredible team at Discovery Federal Credit Union doesn’t just thank Berks Veterans for their service – they honor it through action. We are deeply grateful for their compassion, generosity, and unwavering commitment to those who have served.”

Whether it’s preventing an eviction, keeping utilities running, or helping with urgent transportation, medical, or mental health needs, this fund provides a helping hand when it’s needed most. Our donation will go directly toward helping the Veterans Affairs team connect local veterans with the resources they need to get back on their feet or find a little support in the community.
“Veterans have given so much in service to our country, and we believe honoring that service means being there for them when they need us most,” said Michele Smith, President/CEO of Discovery FCU. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to support a program that makes a direct difference in the lives of local veterans and to invite our community to be part of that effort.”
Join Our Vetsgiving Drive
While our team at Discovery FCU is honored to be able to give back to such an important cause, real change comes from the community. It comes right from you!
We’re keeping the spirit of giving going with Vetsgiving, a donation drive to bring a little extra warmth and comfort to veterans in our community.
Now through November 20, we’re collecting the following items in our Wyomissing branch lobby:
- New wool and cotton socks
- New or gently used sweatshirts and sweatpants
- Canned proteins
Every donation, big or small, is another way to show our local veterans that their community is here for them.
Come Together at Our Neighbors & Makers Open House
Want to learn more about how you can make a difference? Join us on Thursday, November 19, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at our Wyomissing branch for our Neighbors & Makers Open House!
We’ll be welcoming representatives from Berks County Veterans Affairs, who will be available to share information about their services, answer questions, and explain how the Temporary Assistance Fund supports local veterans. You’re also welcome to bring your Vetsgiving donations that evening!
While you’re here, enjoy a little holiday shopping with local vendors, complimentary cookies and hot cocoa, and the chance to learn about other organizations making a difference in our community, including Variety, the Children’s Charity of the Delaware Valley.

A Little Kindness Goes a Long Way
To our veterans, thank you for your service and sacrifice. And to our members and neighbors who continue to show up for our community, thank you for helping us make efforts like these possible.
Together, we can show our appreciation in a way that truly makes a difference and See What Can Be when a community comes together.
