Proudly Serving Berks County Since 1959

Discovery FCU has been serving the Berks County region for more than half a century. Founded in 1959, the credit union has continuously grown in size, membership, and capability, yet we maintain a value-driven, member-focused philosophy that sets us apart.

The Berks County credit union was formed sixty years ago when a devoted group of employees of the Western Electric facility in Laureldale, PA joined together to open WELaurel FCU to help its hard-working employees achieve their financial goals. At the time, only employees of Western Electric and their family members could belong to the credit union. As Western Electric flourished and employed hundreds of Berks County residents, the credit union grew in size.  The Muhlenberg Township facility eventually became known as the Reading Works of AT&T Technologies and in 1981 the credit union changed its name to Reading Works FCU.

As the facility started to experience reduced employment, the credit union needed to pursue additional growth opportunities to better serve its members. Shortly before Reading Works became part of Lucent Technologies in 1996, the credit union moved to Spring Township and converted to a multiple-sponsor credit union, which diversified its membership to allow employees at other select businesses to join the credit union. Once Lucent Technologies became Agere and the decision was made to decommission the Reading plant, the credit union converted to a community charter allowing everyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Berks County to be eligible for membership. This new charter provided the credit union better opportunities to increase its membership and invest in new technology to keep up with the changing needs of its members.

In 2004 the credit union changed its name to Discovery FCU and shortly thereafter constructed and moved to a new state-of-the-art facility in Wyomissing. In 2010 the credit union added Business Services to its product offerings and added First Mortgages in 2011. Throughout those years the credit union also welcomed the members of New Visions FCU, Reading Tube Employees FCU and Barta Berks Community FCU through mutually acceptable mergers. The credit union upgraded its core operating system in 2015 to provide new operating efficiencies and evolve with current technologies. The upgrade allowed the credit union to offer its members a robust online banking product, mobile banking, shared branching and more. Over the last three years Discovery FCU has implemented several new innovative and dynamic growth strategies using digital technology and process improvement techniques to offer its members the ultimate banking experience and provide new opportunities for future growth and success.
